Prensa Ibérica began life in December 1978 in the Canary Islands, emblematically coinciding with the promulgation of the Spanish Constitution. At that transcendental moment the first company, Editorial Prensa Canaria, is purchased. This company, managing the early-morning La Provincia/DLP and the last existing evening paper in Spain, Diario de Las Palmas, laid the foundations of what will later become the press group Editorial Prensa Ibérica. Years later, in January 2000, the two papers would merge to create La Provincia – Diario de Las Palmas (DLP).

The real structuring of Editorial Prensa Ibérica will not take place until 1984, when the group was incorporated on the acquisition of La Nueva España in Oviedo, the Levante-EMV of Valencia and INFORMACIÓN de Alicante, at an official auction of the State Social Communication Media. La Nueva España and INFORMACIÓN were both leaders in terms of circulation and readership within their respective geographical areas, and together they became the foundation of the current family-owned regional media group, Editorial Prensa Ibérica.

With the years Prensa Iberica has increase its area of influence thanks to the acquisition or foundation of new newspapers under the title “La Opinion de…” Currently the Group is widely established in practically the whole of our country and has 16 daily mastheads, 14 are of general information and 2 is sports news.
