La Opinión - El Correo de Zamora belongs to the select group of centenary papers in Spain, seven of which are from the autonomous-region of Castilla y León. Leader in circulation and readership in the province of Zamora, in 2007 received the "Medalla de Oro de las Cortes Autonómicas", highest distinction of the regional Parliament for its brilliant journalistic trajectory given the fact that the paper celebrated 110 years of existence. El Correo de Zamora was founded in 1897, closely linked to Tradicionalismo although in 1916 this title was changed to Diario Católico, for its nearness to the ecclesiastical viewpoints and catholic farming trade unions. After the civil war it became part of the press chain Prensa del Movimimiento and at the end of the 70s, it started to form part of the organization Medios de Communicación del Estado (State Media). In 1984, it was purchased at an auction by a group of well-known businessmen from Zamora, and as of 1992 it belongs to Editorial Prensa Ibérica, which managed to merge the province's two most important papers of the latter years of the 20th century: the old Correo and a very young Opinión.
