Faro de Vigo

FARO DE VIGO is the oldest newspaper of Spanish press. It was founded in 1853 to defend the general interests of Galicia and Vigo. Its main goal was to overcome South Galicia's isolation, which it achieved in 1881 with the opening of th e Vigo-Ourense railroad. This would be one of the multiple campaigns started by the newspaper in favour of the progress and the modernization of the territory. For its antiquity and familiarity, in many areas of the Rías Baixas and the South of Galicia, Faro is synonym for newspaper . When somebody wants a newspaper, they say: "Deme O Faro" (Give me O Faro) . The best Galician writers, from Curros Enríquez and Emilia Pardo Bazán to Torrente Ballester and Alvaro Cunqueiro; and artists as well known as Federico Ribas, Maside and Castelao have been usual contributors. Because to publish or to draw for Faro is motif of pride for any Galician.
Since 1986 it passes to be part of the group Editorial Prensa Ibérica. It starts a stage of modernization and expansion that means the increase of the circulation and the publication of six daily territorial editions . In 2003, it celebrated its hundred and fifty anniversary with the assistance of the King Juan Carlos.
