The first issue of La Nueva España was published in Oviedo on December 19, 1936, in the midst of the Spanish civil war battlefront. The second issue was not released until January 2nd, 1937, and from then it appeared on a daily basis. Born as an organ of the Spanish Falange JONS, it became part of the state-owned Prensa del Movimiento after the war. From the early 40s and under the management of its founder, Francisco Arias de Velasco, it stablished itself as the main newspaper of Asturias. Since April 1977 it was run by an organization called Medios de Comunicación del Estado (State Communication Media).
On April 1st, 1984 La Nueva España was acquired at a public auction by Editorial Prensa Asturiana, which belongs to Editorial Prensa Ibérica. With the change of ownership, La Nueva España started to improve and expand, widely exceeding its previous achievements and establishing itself as one of the main Spanish newspapers, though socially and territorially remaining a newspaper from Asturias. Its diffusion has grown uninterruptedlly year after year since 1984. It is reflected in the certifications of the Oficina de Justificación de la Difusión (OJD, Office for the Verification of Diffusion), according to which, the sales figures of La Nueva España doubled from 1984 to 2009.
According to surveys carried out by the Estudio General de Medios (EGM, Media General Study), it establisheel itself as one of the ten most read general information newspapers in Spain.

In order to consolidate its relationship with Asturian society, in 1988 Nueva España set up Club Prensa Asturiana, a space for communication and debate. Attending events is free of charge. Having its own headquarters in Oviedo, and activity centres in Gijón, Avilés and Cuencas Mineras, the club program is based both on its own initiative and on requests and proposals from the community; either associations or organizations, or individuals usually related to the news and a wide variety of topics. Throughout the year the club holds over 300 events with an attendance of over 300,000 people. It also organizes well-received itinerant activities through what is called "consejos abiertos", debates with the public organized in the different municipalities of Asturias.

Online Edition

Prensa Asturiana Media (PAM), another company of the group, publishes the digital edition of the newspaper, the most consulted in Asturias on the net.

Other activities

Thanks to its diversification, Editorial Prensa Asturiana decided to enter new fields in the media world. From the very beginning it has had a significant share, betting on new technologies, in Telecable, fiber optic cable, telephone and television operators. After having been a pioneer in introducing new technologies in Spain, it managed to settle really well in Asturias.
Recently, Editorial Prensa Asturiana, through its subsidiary PAM, entered the audiovisual world with the creation of Asturmedia. Asturmedia is a television production company, being Editorial Prensa Asturiana its main associate along with Mediapro, one of the most important companies in the media sector, which obtained by public auction several newscasts on Asturian television.
La Nueva España also offers its support, through collaborations and sponsorship, to the most important cultural, social and sports events held in Asturias, thus guaranteeing quality.
Thanks to its active participation in Asturias' regional life, along with the enormous repercussions of its journalistic function , it has become an authentic Asturian institution.
